Why I Will Help
"Why I will help." This is not a questionable statement, it is a statement with a purpose and direct meaning. I will be a Human Services professional, because I have been called to serve. My Christian faith is the foundation for all I believe. Everyone of my values rests on Biblical doctrine and personal convictions. A verse from the Bible explains beautifully why I will help. Philippians 2:1-4 "Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interest of the others"

Knowing these values, where I have come from, how I grew up only enlightens how I can align my personal and professional self. My professional identity is shaped through how I see myself as a helper. My future goal in the Human Services field is to work in nonprofit adoption. This is because I take to heart the Bible verse James 1:27 "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." This is what it means to mesh the personal into the professional self. These values of my personal self directly correlates with how professionally I will be a Human Services professional. Where faith can be a strength, for many people it is a weakness. Faith in itself can be seen as a person being weak. It can be limiting in diverse contexts, and it can be a point of contention with many. However, these are risks but it is not something to fear. My faith is not to be hidden. It is acceptable that different views are known and understood, not everybody must believe the same way. But faith is never a hindrance or an obstacle, it is a way of life for me.
